TT Ari is a "Nova Like" object at RA 02:06:53 Dec 15:17:42.

The AAVSO has issued an an alert requesting close observation of this object and says:

"...it is exhibiting very high-amplitude (~1 magnitude) periodic
oscillations with a period of 0.371 days. This period is of unknown
origin; it is significantly longer than the orbital period of 0.137551
days, and is longer than the pulsation periods of white dwarf stars."

I obtained a couple of images of it last night and estimated the magnitudes in Red and Blue using Astrometrica.

The measurement images were obtained by splitting the LRGB png-file into R,G and B components then saving the R and B images as FIT files for Astrometrica.

Results so far:

20 10 2009 21:07 R=14.9 B=15.5
20 10 2009 23:37 R=14.3 B=14.7

I have a couple more missions left this week and will continue to follow this object. Is anyone interested in having a "TT Ari night" by combining our missions? It would be a great achievement for SLOOH and its members if we could actually track a complete cycle.

(Even better if we could make some reservations for OZ and Chile!)

Here is an example image (not very exciting):

Tony,

Together, JohnF.050618 and I have 6 missions left, this week. If you'd like to coordinate scheduling, we'd like them to go on this set of missions.

Let us know when and where!

Hello Tony,

are you going to do the proposed set of observations also next week ?

In that case I am certainly willing to devote a couple of Slooh missions to participate in this observation.

Let me know if this can be of any help and, in that case, send me more details about the needed schedule.

ciao
alessandro

Thanks for the responses. I will try to coordinate some missions on this object.

For detailed background info you may be interested in this link:

http://www.aavso.org/vstar/vsots/0102.shtml

The current alert notices are here:

http://www.aavso.org/publications/specialnotice/172.shtml
http://www.aavso.org/publications/alerts/alert408.shtml

The complete list of all reports to the AAVSO is here:

http://www.aavso.org/cgi-bin/newql.pl?name=TT%20Ari&output=html

I propose we go for the night of Monday 26-27 Oct for a coordinated observation and that we try to capture the 0.371-day variation cycle.

Currently the object is visible to SLOOH from about 21:00UT to 06:00UT. A mission once per hour should give us a complete cycle of the variation. (But the more the better).

I have two available reservations at the moment and have reserved 21:02 and 22:02. By then I may have some more missions available.

Please let me know what time zones you are in / any preferences for mission times and I will set up a schedule.

If you want to book a time the coordinates are 02:06:53 +15:17:42 and use the Generic option.

Okay, Tony, we're covering 23:02 and 24:02.

Is it possible that you made a mistake in your 22:02 entry? The seconds of declination are different.

TT Ari observation schedule - we have:

21:02 TonyE
22:02 TonyE
23:02 Malcolm
24:02 Malcolm
-
-
-
-
04:07 Alessandro

(I have anticipated because at 05:02 the star would have been too low)
Unfortunately, the slot at 04:02 was reserved

Hello Tony,

Good work with TT Ari!

You mentioned you converted the SLOOH .png files to FITS to use with Astrometrica. What program do you use to do this? I have been searching for a converter, but so far have not been successful. Please let me know, thanks!

Robert, I have been using Maxim DL (an old version). But you can also use ImageJ that is a free piece of software.

Tony,

I took a photo of TT Ari at about 22:44 UTC (maybe the moon light is disturbing, but I did it to try Astrometrica)

When you want - together with other Slooh members - we can arrange a coordinated imaging session so to cover the whole night as you proposed.

ciao
