The hot spot just below galaxy center is near a usual fuzzy spot.

I am not sure if it is something of interest yet. I have a solo at 21:42.

Feel free to help me rule hot spots and others out.

Selby

besides your solo, it looks like there are several editor missions scheduled tonight for M64, so hopefully we will be able to examine it closely.

Today the 21:42 UTC image showed nothing.

So we go back to the drawing board!

I think it's a CCD artefact of some sort. I had it on a mission a couple of days ago. It's still there on your 21:42 image - almost dead centre of the image.

Looking again at the M64 image I notice that there are several other very similar looking spots. Here is one magnified x2 and stretched for a close look:

Looks very much like a faint star out of focus with a collimation problem - but the "real" stars in the image are OK. I cannot think how this can happen - any theories?

Looks like water droplets on the CCD chip to me. They would act as a lens & cause difference in brightness of the inside vs. edges. We use to be able to see the temp of the chip & we could get a hint at if this might be happening, but that ability was taken from the MI long ago.

That's my guess though, perhaps brought about by the cooler being a little over-anxious to do it's job.
