Comet 205P Giacobini outburst after being lost for 112 years.

On Sept 10 2008 Comet D/1896 R2 was re-discovered by Koichi Itagaki and Hiroshi Kaneda. now named Comet 205P/2008 R6 (Giacobini)

Reports that the comet is currently in a outburst.
Period of 6.66 years

This is my 50th Comet that I have imaged using Slooh.

Nice job, Tony! How fitting, too, that your 50th observed comet is not just any comet, but one that was long-lost. We should have a Golden Comet Award for your achievement. Very Happy

Itagaki sure is a busy man. I see his name frequently with supernovae discoveries.

Yeah - excellent, and as Tavi says great that #50 is a bit special!!

Altogether one in the eye for those who say Slooh is not real astronomy!

And a nice looking comet at that! I like the cool tail it sports! We can rely on Tony to bring us cool comets. Some day it might be nice to put them all into a slideshow!

Hey Tony that was great - however can you say stupdio - not you me!!
I had that image but could not place it - via JPL/ Nasa . I had the numbers but nothing was close then in the database. Yes any idoit can see it's a comet - don't take that personally. I just lost it that night always, always when a different object is seen in the sky - make a note of it and go later to prove what you thought you saw. Can you say Kick me? Nevermind.

you can find it via SSD NASA

just put in 205P in the search box
http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi

On the NASA SSD site looks like the comet is broken up into 4 parts.
I will check some others sites to see if I can confirm that.

205P/Giacobini
205P/Giacobini-A
205P/Giacobini-B
205P/Giacobini-C

I did find this picture

by Martin Mobberley

it looks like 4 pieces to me.

I wish we could use Dome 2 HM to get a better image of this comet

Tony's snap of Giacobini inspired me, so I took a series of snaps of the comet yesterday and combined them into an animated GIF here:

Looks pretty cool to me.
