this is going to be a great comet to watch once it comes around the sun.
New light curves project Mag 4 in Jan Feb. It should be Mag 7+ when it becomes viewable again around Dec 20th
In Jan it will be easily seen with binos. Naked eye when it reaches Mag 4 in Feb.
On Feb 24 the comet will make its closest approach to the earth at .41 AU

thanks goes out to Tavi and Rob for hosting the Slooh alert mission.
here is a few images.
This is the 1st time we where able to image this comet after its been behind the sun.
we really cant see the tail very good as we are currently look almost strait on the head and down the tail.

The green color indicates an abundance of cyanogen and diatomic carbon.

Excellent view! Thanks Tony! Sorry I missed the alert, but it was too late for me last night. Hope to listen to the podcast! Thanks Rob and Tavi too. _________________ 20" Obsession, 12.5" Obsession, Meade ETX 125, 8" Orion Reflector, Celestron 25X100, Celestron 15X70

Great images Tony. Nice to see one where the comet is the brightest object in the frame. Can't wait 'til Feb .

Nice. Not the fastest CCD frame crossing comet eh?
Where are the magnitude estimates coming from Tony (if you don't mind me asking)?
Just wondering if it is possible to estimate them from a SLOOH image.

I convert the jpg to fits, then plate solve them and use a combination of MaXim 5 and Astrometrica. I tired doing this with variable star and there is not enough data in jpg to make a highly accurate mag estimations, but it can get you in the ball park. _________________ Submit your astronomy images to Amateur Astronomy Picture of the Day Your image could be featured.
