we should get some great WF image using D2 on June 6 as Comet C/2007 G1 passes next to M9

Unfortunately, Dome 2 was offline for maintenance when this comet appeared to pass so closely to M9, but I did capture a few D1HM shots.

Here, Comet C/2007 G1 can be seen moving NE to SW, as it occults the 15th magnitude star, USNOA2 0675-18628543, in Ophiuchus. A tail is just barely apparent, extending N. A slightly larger fov, at this magnification, would show the comet having just slipped between globular cluster M9 and dark nebula B64 to the NE and globular cluster NGC 6342 and dark nebula B259 to the SE. These images were obtained on the evening of June 06, 2008 UT, using SLOOH's Dome 1 High Mag telescope.

I was doing a routine image of this comet the other night, and was shocked to see it in the WF, as I had not noticed it was nearby anything. Seems it just happened to pose at that moment with M4 on one side of it and Antares on the other. IC 4606 is about Antares. My skymap does not have the nebulosity around Al Miyat (top right quad) labelled. Shows it to be further than the extent of IC4606, though that may be the wrong bit. Even a sat. or NEO at the top right!

I don't see the LINEAR comet in your image. Starry Night notes it as being just above Antares to the left of NGC 6144. This would have been a beautiful field for an animation.

Checking that nebulosity around Al Niyat, SkyMap also shows it a little more distant than it appears in your image, however that gentle arc is consistent. I guess it's all about perception and distance, maybe?

My bad. I thought it was NGC 6144 which isn't on my map, and the HM image didn't develop so I didn't have a comparison (and I didn't know it's mag.). I have an image of the same field from a few months earlier so I might try the anim. option.
